Tang Dynasty Fashion Poster

A hand-drawn ethnography poster detailing various aspects of women’s fashion during the late Tang Dynasty in China, and the process behind creating it.

Research

During ideation, I took general look into women’s fashion during the Tang Dynasty and noted the distinct differences in clothing as it evolved. The original plan was to create a timeline of how fashion evolved throughout the dynasty.

Eventually, I narrowed down my research to target a more specific era within the Tang Dynasty. Since the Late Tang Dynasty was very rich in visual culture compared to earlier eras within the dynasty, I did visual studies on the clothing, makeup, hairstyles, and accessories.

I later explored different titles, subtitles, and ways I could incorporate Chinese characters and calligraphy into the poster.

Following visual research, I explored potential hierarchy and focal points, making sure that details didn’t get lost within the composition.

Drafts

Moving on to my drafts, I decided to push my compositions further to find something more organized and balanced. In my first attempt, I experimented with a 3 column grid.

I later experimented with a 7 column grid to put more emphasis on the center focal point, while still having space to organize my information alongside it.

In the final draft, I took inspiration from old movie posters and drew 2 full-length figures showcasing fashion from the late Tang era, and a close up alongside them that focuses on hair and makeup.
